Florida mom paying for armed officer at daughter’s public elementary school

A Flagler County woman is not waiting to see if the school her daughter attends can come up with money to hire a resource officer.


She is paying for school security.


Laura Lauria paid nearly $12,000 to put an armed off-duty deputy at King’s Elementary School five days a week, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.


Some parents say they applaud the idea, others say the school district should pay for security.


Lt. Robert Webber with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said the officer will be off-duty and has been hired much the way deputies provide detail for any other event, like at churches or at the speedway.


Flagler County School Superintendent Janet Valentine said in a phone interview the arrangement was made through her and the sheriff’s office and that she welcomes parents’ help to provide security at any of the schools, adding that any parent can do the same thing…
