N.C. school system settles in translation case

February 24, 2017

RALEIGH — A settlement between the Wake County public schools and federal officials is expected to lead to better communication, translated documents and other help.

The state’s largest school system settled with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.

The Southern Poverty Law Center and Advocates for Children’s Services filed a complaint in June on behalf of parents who were having difficulty communicating with the system. In announcing the settlement, Wake schools said it has taken steps to make sure that people who don’t speak English very well can communicate with the system.
